MPS collaborates to build Facilities Master Plan

$

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is working to create a new Long-range Facilities Master Plan. The district seeks a new plan to align with changes that have occurred within the last five or more years in our community. Developing this plan requires an understanding of the facility implications of the education mission, goals and programs of the district as well as significant input from students, families, staff, community members and partners.

A Long-range Facilities Master Plan will provide a cost effective, actionable plan to address the short- and long-term facility needs of the district. Drafting the plan will include a comprehensive analysis of education trends, school programming, capacity, building standards, operating costs and other factors. This information will be used to allocate resources and make decisions for the long-term, best interests of our students and community.

MPS seeks opinions and suggestions from students, families, staff, community members and partners. The district will use the insights and sentiments gathered to inform the plan’s development, establish priorities regarding MPS facilities, and make recommendations to the MPS Board of School Directors. MPS will also conduct walkthroughs at every school to determine the facility condition and the education adequacy of current learning environments.

WHERE AND WHEN

MPS will host multiple community conversations throughout November.

• Wednesday, November 8 @ South Division High School

• Monday, November 13 @ Bay View High School

• Wednesday, November 15 @ Hopkins-Lloyd Community School

• Wednesday, November 29 @ James Madison Academic Campus

All events will take place from 6 to 7 p.m.

Public Invited to Community Conversations on School Discipline

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will host seven Community Conversations throughout April regarding the district’s current disciplinary practices.
MPS is dedicated to making sure each child who steps through the doors of its 160 schools is treated fairly. The Administration has been working with the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) Office of Civil Rights (OCR) regarding a resolution agreement to clarify the district’s disciplinary policies and to prevent circumstances where there are discipline disparities.
The district has voluntarily entered into this agreement after an initial report from the OCR found disparities in discipline in a sampling of black and white students dating back to the 2014-15 school year. In reaching this agreement, the district acknowledges that it has room to improve its disciplinary practices.
The agreement has several major requirements.
  • Reviewing and revising the MPS student code of conduct and discipline to improve clarity about what is considered inappropriate behavior and the appropriate range of consequences for those behaviors
  • Training staff to identify students at risk for behavioral difficulties and using early intervention methods before students are referred beyond the classroom for more intensive disciplinary action
  • Providing support to ensure that discipline is imposed equitably and fairly across the district regardless of race, gender, religion or national origin
  • Working with students, staff, families and the community to develop discipline policies and procedures that are fully understood and transparent
Milwaukee Public Schools invites families and the public to attend one of its Community Conversations on discipline. A full list of the sessions is below. Community input is vital to this work.

Sign up now—stay on track to graduate, or discover and explore! MPS is offering two sessions for learning this summer: June Term (J-Term) from June 4 to 29, and Summer Academy from July 2 to 27. Students can attend one or both sessions. All city of Milwaukee residents, grades K5 to 12, are eligible and can enroll at select sites.

Both sessions are designed for summer fun and will include science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), music, outdoor activities, field trips, and more! Students can catch up, get ahead, or just have fun learning. Summer classes help students strengthen and retain skills so they start strong in the fall. High school students can earn up to one credit in each session through credit recovery, credit acceleration, and/or internships.

J-Term and Summer Academy are free! J-Term provides learning for students on the early start calendar, since their school year ends in mid-May. Summer Academy is available for students on both the traditional and early start calendars. Traditional calendar students looking for options in June are encouraged to look at the variety of summer enrichment camp offerings that can be found on the J-Term website.

The summer program has many community partners to deliver art, coding, music, theater, outdoor education, STEM, and many other offerings. Field trips to local museums and nature centers will allow students to discover their community. Summer enrichment camps allow students to explore new ideas and abilities.

Child care is provided through the MPS Recreation Department; fees may apply. Summer child care provides educational activities in a safe environment with caring, trained instructors.

This year, registration for elementary and middle school students will take place online through the MPS Parent Portal. Families who need to create an account or need assistance can visit MPS Central Services at 5225 W. Vliet St. or phone 414-475-8159. High school students should register with their guidance counselor.

To learn more, talk to the parent coordinator in any MPS school or find out more on the J-Term and Summer Academy pages of the MPS website.
