Keep it positive here at Hayes Bilingual! Along with starting 2nd Step, a school-wide bully prevention program, March 2, 2016, marked the first annual “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign at the school. It is a national campaign that is “an ongoing effort by Special Olympics, Best Buddies and [their] supporters to inspire respect and acceptance through raising the consciousness of society about the R-word and how hurtful words and disrespect can be toward people with intellectual disabilities” and takes place in the month of March ( http://www.r-word.org/r-word-resources.aspx ).
This February, over 110 teachers and students at Hayes were at the forefront of making the pledge to stop using the ‘r’ word and “Spread the Word to End the Word.” They will be continuing to encourage their peers through the school to join the mission.
Today those who made the pledge to stop using the ‘r’ word were part of a flashmob, a sudden event where people do something all at once. Everyone involved wore specially designed t-shirts from Best Buddies of Wisconsin in support of the movement.
Hayes is committed to the care of all. More students will continue to have opportunities to be involved with dissemination positivity and using kind and people first language with each other for the month of March and the rest of the school year with the help of PBIS. Students will also be joining Bay View High School students who have “Spread the Word to End the Word” for many years under the direction of Ms. Katrina Kasik, the Bay View Best Buddies Advisor.
When asked about making the pledge for “Spread the Word to End the Word” Seventh grader Emma Soto exclaimed,“This is an important campaign because we can help prevent people from saying the r-word and putting other people down. It helps people learn about respecting others!”
Please join us on this mission and look out for positive messages around the school and on the website!
